Rhode Island became the last New England state to legalize same-sex marriage, in 2013. Providence, its creative capital and a college town at heart, packs a surprisingly robust queer scene into a small, walkable city.
Most of the LGBTQ+ venues cluster around Washington Street and the downtown core, an easy stroll from the arts district and the riverfront. Mirabar, tracing its roots to 1947, ranks among the oldest continuously running gay bars in the country, joined by dance clubs and drag-forward bars that keep the small scene lively all week.
Providence leans on its art-school energy, its food, and its walkability, making the gay scene feel woven into a compact, characterful downtown.
Rhode Island PrideFest is one of New England's largest, taking over a downtown park each June and closing with a signature Illuminated Nighttime Parade.
