About LGBTQ+ Boston
On 18 November 2003 the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health that the state could not bar same-sex couples from marriage. On 17 May 2004 couples began marrying, the first legal same-sex marriages in the United States, eleven years before the Supreme Court settled the question nationally. Whatever else Boston is, it was first.
The South End was the historic gay neighborhood and is now largely priced out of being one, though the Trophy Room keeps a foothold. The weight has shifted to Back Bay, where Club Cafe has functioned as bar, restaurant and cabaret for decades and is the reliable answer to where to start, with Dani's Queer Bar and Icon nearby.

The Theater District holds Jacques' Cabaret, the long-running drag room that has outlasted essentially everything around it, and Legacy. Beyond the core, Cathedral Station, the Alley Bar, Rebel Rebel, dbar and Blend out in Dorchester, and ManRay across the river in Cambridge, spread the scene across a city that is smaller than its reputation and easy to cross.
Boston's institutions carry real national weight. Fenway Health, founded in 1971, is among the largest LGBTQ+ health organizations in the country and a serious HIV research center. BAGLY has been working with queer youth since 1980, the Bisexual Resource Center is one of the oldest bi organizations anywhere, and the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition does the statewide advocacy.
Boston Pride has a complicated recent history worth knowing: the original organization dissolved in July 2021 after years of criticism that it excluded trans people and people of color, and the parade returned in June 2023 under new organizers, Boston Pride for the People, running a deliberately less corporate event.
