New Haven, the Connecticut city anchored by Yale University, has a small gay scene centered on a long-running institution. 168 York Street Cafe, set in a brownstone near the Yale campus, is one of Connecticut's oldest gay bars and the city's only gay-owned bar and restaurant, hosting monthly drag shows and dance parties. The scene is compact, more a beloved single venue plus a welcoming student-driven culture than a nightlife district. New Haven pairs its university energy and famous pizza with an easygoing, accepting feel. New York and the larger scenes of the Northeast corridor are a short train ride away.
