About LGBTQ+ Nashville
In March 2023 Tennessee became the first state to pass a drag ban, drafted as a restriction on male and female impersonators performing anywhere a minor might see. That June a federal judge appointed by Donald Trump struck it down as unconstitutionally vague and substantially overbroad, though his order covered only one county. In July 2024 the Sixth Circuit reversed him on standing rather than on the merits and directed the case dismissed, the full court declined to rehear it, and the Supreme Court declined to take it. The law therefore stands, has never been tested on what it actually says, and Nashville's drag shows have carried on without interruption the entire time.
Church Street is the strip. Play Dance Bar has anchored it since 2004 and runs drag most nights of the week, which in the circumstances reads as a position rather than a schedule. Tribe and Canvas Lounge sit alongside it, Suzy Wong's does drag brunch, and Trax and Peckers cover the downtown end.

East Nashville is the other half and the less polished one. The Lipstick Lounge has been a lesbian bar since 2002 and has outlasted almost all of its counterparts nationally, with Beyond the Edge nearby and the Cobra and Pearl Diver drawing the queer-adjacent music crowd.
Up on Music Row, White Limozeen is a Dolly Parton-themed rooftop bar that is not a gay bar and functions as one anyway, which is a fair summary of how this city handles the subject.
