About LGBTQ+ Memphis
Tennessee was one of the four states whose marriage bans fell in the Supreme Court's 2015 ruling that brought marriage equality nationwide. Memphis, the soulful home of Beale Street and the blues, gathers its LGBTQ+ life in its walkable, artsy midtown.
The community centers on Midtown, especially the Cooper-Young historic district, where Tennessee's first rainbow crosswalk was painted across Young Avenue in 2019, and the nearby Overton Square. A handful of long-running bars carry the nightlife, from karaoke-and-jukebox neighborhood spots to the dance floors with deep roots in the city's Black LGBTQ+ community, backed by OUTMemphis, the region's community center.
