About LGBTQ+ Knoxville
Marriage equality came to Tennessee in 2015 through the Supreme Court's nationwide ruling. Knoxville, the East Tennessee city at the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, has a small, spirited queer scene woven through its revitalized center and its university culture.
There is no defined gayborhood; LGBTQ+ life is most visible Downtown, in the Old City, around Market Square, and near the University of Tennessee campus. Long-running bars like The International anchor the nightlife, joined by the community-minded Pride Center and a strong tradition of roving queer dance parties that reach people beyond the traditional bar scene.
