Gay Guide to Mérida
Mexico opened same-sex marriage nationwide in 2022, and the state of Yucatán had legalized it the year before. Mérida, the elegant colonial capital of the Yucatán, has become one of Mexico's most relaxed and welcoming LGBTQ+ cities.
In recent years Mérida has gained a reputation as a haven for LGBTQ+ expats and retirees, drawn by its safety, colonial architecture, and slower pace; that community has helped nurture a small but active queer nightlife.
There is no single gayborhood here. Instead, queer-friendly cantinas, cafes, and gay bars, several with regular drag shows, are spread across the city and clustered around the historic center.
Each June, Mérida Pride fills the Plaza Grande and surrounding streets with a festival and parade, and the city makes an easy base for the region's cenotes and Mayan ruins.
