About LGBTQ+ Marrakech
Morocco criminalizes same-sex sexual activity under Article 489 of its penal code, with sentences of up to three years, and the law applies to visitors as well as citizens. There is no legal recognition or protection, and arrests do occur. Marrakech, the great imperial city and Morocco's tourism capital, must be approached with that reality in mind.
Despite the prohibition, a discreet, informal LGBTQ+ culture has existed here for generations, largely invisible by necessity. It lives not in open bars or a Pride march but in an understood discretion: certain hammams known within the community, and riad guesthouses that quietly welcome queer travelers. The tourism economy has long made room for a careful, unspoken presence in the visitor areas.
