About LGBTQ+ Málaga
Spain decriminalized homosexuality in 1979 as democracy returned after the Franco dictatorship, and in 2005 it became one of the first countries in the world to open marriage to same-sex couples. Andalusia's Costa del Sol has since become one of Europe's most relaxed regions for LGBTQ+ travelers, and Málaga, its cultural capital, reflects that ease.
Málaga's compact gay quarter sits just north of the historic center, around Plaza de la Merced and Calle Cervantes, an area locals nickname the Gay Ghetto. Its bars, cafes, and small clubs, several with regular drag nights, form the heart of the city's queer nightlife.

Beyond the gayborhood, Málaga's walkable old town, its beaches, and a warm, welcoming reputation have made it one of Andalusia's fastest-growing LGBTQ+ destinations.
Málaga Pride takes over the district each June with a parade and community events. For a larger circuit-and-beach scene, the resort town of Torremolinos, a short train ride down the coast, has one of Spain's best-known gay beaches and nightlife strips.
