Poland decriminalized homosexuality early, in 1932, but it remains one of the more socially conservative countries in the European Union and recognizes no same-sex marriage or civil partnerships. Krakow, the country's cultural capital and former royal seat, is nonetheless its most relaxed and welcoming city for LGBTQ+ visitors.
The scene centers on Kazimierz, the atmospheric former Jewish quarter that has become the city's bohemian heart, where a compact cluster of gay and gay-friendly bars and cafes sits among the district's courtyards and nightlife. Around the Old Town and Kazimierz, visitors generally move about comfortably, though acceptance thins outside the center.
