About LGBTQ+ Bratislava
Slovakia decriminalized homosexuality in 1962 but recognizes no same-sex marriage or civil partnerships, and the community has faced real adversity, including a deadly 2022 attack outside a Bratislava gay bar. The capital's scene has carried on with visible resilience and solidarity.
Queer life gathers in the Old Town, though the scene has lost both of its landmarks. Apollon, Slovakia's first gay club, closed in September 2026 after 31 years, citing the borough's early closing hours and rising costs, and its owner hopes to reopen elsewhere in the city. Tepláreň, the bar targeted in the 2022 attack, became an education and community space and closed at the end of 2023; it lives on as a cabaret and party night at Šafko Klub and as a touring discussion series. The atmosphere in the center is relaxed and welcoming, with a mixed crowd of locals and visitors.
