About LGBTQ+ Budapest
In March 2025 Hungary's parliament banned Pride events and authorized facial recognition to identify anyone who turned up, passing the law 136 votes to 27, a single day after it was introduced. Budapest's mayor, Gergely Karácsony, reclassified the march as a municipal event to get around it, and that June more than a hundred thousand people walked it anyway, past temporary cameras installed along the route. Prosecutors charged him in January 2026. Orbán's government lost the election that April, police authorized the 2026 march, and tens of thousands walked it in June. The law itself has not been repealed, and neither has the 2021 statute restricting what minors can be shown about gay life.
The scene is modest for a capital and sits in the inner districts. District VI holds Action Bar, with Alterego, Why Not, Le Cafe Mystery, Gaby's, Habroló, Gaga and the Freedom Club scattered through the surrounding streets, and Capella down in District V taking the drag and club nights. Everything is within a walk of the ruin-bar quarter, and most of it shares that crowd.

Budapest Pride is now, unavoidably, the most political Pride in Europe. The venues themselves operate normally, prices are low, and the city is extraordinarily beautiful. The pressure in Hungary has been applied at the level of the state rather than the street, which is precisely why the march matters as much as it does.
