About LGBTQ+ Barcelona
Spain legalized same-sex marriage in July 2005, becoming the third country in the world to do so after the Netherlands and Belgium. Trans-rights legislation passed at the national level in February 2023, allowing gender-marker changes without medical certification for adults aged 16 and over.
The historic gay neighborhood is the Eixample district, specifically the rectangle bordered by Avinguda Diagonal, Gran Via, Carrer d'Aribau, and Passeig de Gràcia. Locals refer to this area as the Gaixample. The streets with the densest concentration of gay venues are Carrer del Consell de Cent and Carrer de la Diputació.
Mar Bella, in the northeastern end of Barcelona's city beach chain, has an unofficial gay section and a nude-bathing area. It has been the city's de facto gay beach since the 1980s. It is accessible via the L4 metro line to Selva de Mar or Llacuna stations.
Sitges, about 35 kilometers south of Barcelona, is a coastal town that has been associated with international gay tourism since the 1970s. It is connected to Barcelona by the R2 South commuter rail line from Passeig de Gràcia and Sants stations, with a journey time of approximately 35 minutes. Sitges hosts its own Pride in June, the Sitges Carnival in February, and Bears Sitges Week in September.
Circuit Festival, held in August, is one of the largest gay-male circuit-party events in the world by attendance, with parties at multiple Barcelona and coastal venues across approximately ten days. Pride Barcelona, the city's main Pride event, takes place in late June, with a parade typically through Eixample and a manifestación that runs the same weekend.
Catalan and Spanish are both official languages in Catalonia. The Barcelona metro (TMB) runs until midnight on weekdays, until 2am on Fridays, and 24 hours on Saturdays. The R2 Sud train to Sitges runs approximately every 30 minutes during the day with reduced frequency overnight.
The Centre LGTBI de Barcelona, the official municipal LGBTQ+ community center, opened in 2018 and is located at Carrer del Comte Borrell 22 in Sant Antoni.
