England decriminalized homosexuality in 1967 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2014. York, the beautifully preserved walled city in the north of England, offers a small, charming queer scene that makes an intimate alternative to nearby Leeds.
The compact medieval center has no dedicated gay quarter, but a friendly cluster of gay and gay-friendly pubs and a lively nightclub sit within the old walls, easy to find on a night out among the snickelways and the shadow of the Minster. The scene is modest and welcoming, a good fit for a city better known for Roman history and Viking heritage than for nightlife.
York rewards a slow visit built around its cathedral, its cobbled streets, and its riverside pubs.
York Pride brings a parade through the center each summer, ending with performances on the Knavesmire, the community's flagship celebration.
