About Utrecht

Gay Guide to Utrecht

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to open marriage to same-sex couples, in 2001, and acceptance runs deep across the country. Utrecht, a historic university city just south of Amsterdam, folds its queer life into a compact, canal-laced center.

The scene gathers along the Oudegracht, the sunken medieval canal at the heart of the city, where long-standing gay bars and cafes sit among the waterside terraces. As a hub for students and young professionals, Utrecht carries an open, activist energy, and the community mingles easily through the central quays rather than in a walled-off district.

Smaller and more relaxed than Amsterdam, the city rewards slow days by the water between churches, markets, and the Dom Tower.

Utrecht Canal Pride, launched in 2017, has a signature parade of decorated boats gliding along the city's canals.
