Gay Guide to Porto
Portugal decriminalized homosexuality in 1983 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2010, and it is now among Europe's most accepting countries. Porto, the country's soulful second city, has a warm, understated queer life spread through its historic center rather than sealed into one district.
There is no single gayborhood; the scene threads through the Baixa downtown and out toward Bonfim, with bars and late venues scattered around Rua de Santa Catarina and the grand Avenida dos Aliados. The result is a city you explore rather than a strip you park on, rewarding a wander between granite churches, tile facades, and riverfront terraces.
The mood is relaxed and local, a good fit for Porto's slower, less touristed feel compared with Lisbon. Drag nights and community-focused bars give the scene its character.
Porto's Marcha do Orgulho has grown since the mid-2000s into one of Portugal's most important Pride marches, filling Rua de Santa Catarina and the Aliados each summer, with a further festival weekend in September.
