Spain opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2005, the third country in the world to do so, and acceptance runs strong across the country. San Sebastian, known in Basque as Donostia, is an elegant beach city on the northern coast with a small but genuinely warm queer scene.
There is no gay district; a handful of gay bars, cafes, and a sauna are scattered through the center and the old town, serving as social hubs for a community that is relatively small but visible and welcoming. The city's real draw is its setting, the shell-shaped La Concha bay, the pintxo bars of the Parte Vieja, and a world-class food culture.
