About LGBTQ+ Bordeaux
France was one of the first countries to decriminalize same-sex relations, striking its sodomy laws in 1791 in the wake of the Revolution; national civil unions followed in 1999 and full marriage equality in 2013. Bordeaux, long shaped by its wine trade, its universities, and a growing arts scene, has carried an open LGBTQ+ presence for decades.
Bordeaux has no single gay village. Its scene splits between two hubs. The historic Saint-Pierre quarter, in the narrow streets near the old port and Place Saint-Michel, holds the densest cluster of LGBTQ+ and gay-friendly bars.
