Gay Guide to Nijmegen
The Netherlands became the first country in the world to open marriage to same-sex couples, in 2001. Nijmegen, the oldest city in the country and a lively university town near the German border, keeps a small but warm scene in its centre.
Bar De Regenboog on Van Welderenstraat is a gay party bar with a 1980s and 90s club feel and Eurovision hits, and Marcus Antonius on Sint Anthoniusplaats is a cosy gay bar with a dance floor.
The Roze Huis, the Pink House on the same square, is the LGBTQ+ community centre for Nijmegen and the region, with groups and events.
The city has playfully billed its own celebration as the smallest Pride ever, a party on a little river ferry. Arnhem is a short train ride north.
