Essen sits at the center of the Rhine-Ruhr, Germany's largest urban region, and its queer venues are spread between Rüttenscheid and the city center rather than a single gay quarter. The best-known address is Pluto Sauna, one of the biggest gay bathhouses in the country, built into a former cinema arcade with three floors of pools, saunas, and lounges. Bars like gentleM and Zum Pümpchen round out a low-key local scene. Essen holds its own Christopher Street Day in summer, and the dense Ruhr cities nearby mean a wider scene is always a short train ride away.
