Gay Guide to Managua
Nicaragua decriminalized homosexuality in 2008, but there is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships, and years of political crackdown have made public organizing difficult. Managua holds nearly all of the country's queer nightlife, small and community-run.
The scene centers on a few venues in and around Barrio Martha Quezada, where El Quetzal is the best-known gay bar, with a dance floor downstairs and karaoke above.
A handful of other clubs and gay-friendly spots round out the nightlife, most lively on weekends.
Visibility stays limited and discretion is the norm, but the community here is resilient and welcoming to those who find it.
