Gay Guide to Ljubljana
Slovenia became the first post-communist country in Europe to legalize same-sex marriage, in 2022, following a Constitutional Court ruling. Ljubljana, its small and effortlessly charming capital, is the hub of queer life in the country and home to the highest share of LGBTQ+ residents of any Slovenian city.
The scene is intimate, centered on the riverside Old Town and the alternative Metelkova arts complex, anchored by Klub Tiffany, the city's main gay club and a long-running community space. Ljubljana is broadly relaxed and tolerant, and the community is a visible, active part of a walkable city built around its willow-lined river and castle hill.
The capital pairs its dragon-bridge fairy-tale looks and green, car-light center with an easygoing, welcoming feel.
Ljubljana Pride, first held in 2001, fills the center each June, drawing tens of thousands from across Slovenia and beyond.
