Gay Guide to Leeds
England decriminalized homosexuality in 1967 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2014. Leeds, the commercial heart of West Yorkshire, has a well-established and welcoming gay scene tucked into the oldest part of its center.
The hub is the Freedom Quarter, centered on Lower Briggate and The Calls, where the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife concentrates. The New Penny, one of the longest-running queer venues in the country and the city's oldest gay bar, sits alongside the two-floor Queens Court club and a run of cabaret and dance bars. Pride Place, the city's first dedicated LGBTQ+ community center, anchors the Quarter year-round.
The area is walkable and central, wrapped into the shopping streets and the waterside Calls, so a night here folds easily into a wider Leeds visit.
Leeds Pride fills Lower Briggate each summer and ranks among the largest free Pride festivals in the UK, with a parade, market stalls, and a main stage by The Calls.
