About LGBTQ+ Jakarta
Indonesia's legal picture for LGBTQ+ people has darkened. While private consensual same-sex activity was not historically criminalized nationwide, a new criminal code passed in 2022 bans all sex outside marriage, and because same-sex unions are unrecognized, that effectively criminalizes gay relationships; a provision on public indecency reaching same-sex acts carries prison terms. Police raids on private gatherings and saunas have led to mass arrests in and around the capital in recent years.
Jakarta nonetheless holds a small, resilient queer community, with some venues in districts like Kebayoran and a scene that surfaces mainly through private networks and events rather than open bars. Urban Jakarta is more tolerant than rural Indonesia, but tolerance is not protection.
