Malaysia criminalizes same-sex activity under a colonial-era penal code carrying up to twenty years and whipping, with additional Sharia penalties for Muslim citizens and no anti-discrimination protections. Johor Bahru, the southern gateway city just across the strait from Singapore, is conservative, and its LGBTQ+ life stays firmly underground.
There are no openly gay bars here. Instead a small, discreet community connects through private events, social media, and a handful of clubs, cafes, and karaoke spots quietly known as friendly. Visibility is low by necessity.
