About LGBTQ+ Medan
Indonesia does not have a single clear national ban on private same-sex activity, but a new criminal code that reaches same-sex relationships through its ban on sex outside marriage has darkened the picture nationwide, and the north of Sumatra, where Medan sits, is among the country's most religiously conservative regions. In 2023 the city's mayor publicly declared Medan anti-LGBT, a stark measure of the local climate.
Despite that hostility, Medan has a large, resilient, and almost entirely hidden queer community, with informal gathering spots such as Kesawan Square and networks that operate well out of public view. Nothing about the scene is open or advertised.
