About LGBTQ+ Lombok
Indonesia's legal climate for LGBTQ+ people is difficult, with a new criminal code that reaches same-sex relationships through its ban on sex outside marriage, and Lombok, a predominantly Muslim island, is more conservative than neighboring Bali. Yet its tourism economy creates real pockets of ease, and gay travelers are generally welcomed much as any other visitors.
Lombok itself has no gay bar, but many local businesses are gay-friendly, buoyed by a steady flow of expats and international travelers. The bigger draw sits just offshore: the Gili Islands, a car-free trio of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air, where white-sand beaches, dive sites, and occasional drag nights make for one of the region's more relaxed queer-friendly escapes.

We include Lombok for honest context. Within the tourist bubble the atmosphere is easygoing, but public displays of affection should be avoided outside private resort settings, and respecting local customs matters. Come for the beaches and the islands, and keep the mood discreet on the mainland.
