About LGBTQ+ Halifax
Canada opened marriage to same-sex couples nationwide in 2005. Halifax, the harbor city that is Atlantic Canada's cultural hub, keeps a resilient queer scene whose venues have come and gone but whose community stays strong.
There is no fixed gay village; the nightlife has churned over the years, with newer spots like Rumours and Backlot HFX reviving the names and spaces of storied bars that came before, and the women-run Company House adding to the mix. Halifax's real strength is its arts culture, home to OutFest, Atlantic Canada's largest queer arts festival each spring.
