Gay Guide to Genoa
Italy recognized same-sex civil unions in 2016 but still does not allow same-sex marriage. Genoa, the salty port capital of Liguria, has branded itself a "City of Rights" since 2008 and carries a low-key but genuine queer scene woven into real local life.
Much of the nightlife sits near the old port and the centro storico, the tangled medieval heart of the city, where gay bars and clubs blend into the general nightlife.
Arcigay Genova, the city's main LGBTQ+ organization, anchors community life with a weekly gay night and year-round events.
The annual Liguria Pride, held in Genoa since 2009, is the season's high point.
