About LGBTQ+ Nice
Jean Cocteau first came to Villefranche-sur-Mer in 1925, trying to get free of opium, and returned to this stretch of coast for decades. He covered the little fishermen's chapel of Saint-Pierre in Villefranche with murals, spent long stretches at the Villa Santo Sospir on Cap Ferrat, and made no secret of his partnership with the actor Jean Marais, with whom he made La Belle et la Bête and Orphée, at a time when that was not a small thing in France. Villefranche is just east of Nice, and the coast Cocteau loved gave the Riviera a queer inheritance long before the city built a scene of its own.
That scene is the Petit Marais, centered on rue Bonaparte between Place Garibaldi and the port. It was a working-class, half-industrial corner most people avoided until the tram arrived in 2007 and the Place du Pin was redeveloped. The first gay bars opened in the 2000s, and since 2019 the street has been painted blue with rainbow flags at each end, repainted every June. Local press has asked whether it is a genuine gay quarter or a branding exercise for tourists, and the honest answer is a bit of both.

Le Code sits near Place Garibaldi, and the old town holds Coco Bar on Rue Droite and Klubber on Rue Benoît Bunico, with Ramdam on Rue Lascaris toward the port and Le 6 and Glam close by. Toward the center, Le Swing on Rue Defly, La Cave Wilson and the Bains Douches sauna on Rue Gubernatis cover the rest, and Librairie Vigna is on Rue Delille.
The Nice Pink Parade has run every July since 2004, along the Promenade des Anglais and on to a closing party at the Théâtre de Verdure. The Centre LGBTQIA+ Côte d'Azur does the year-round community work.
Nice works best as a base for the whole coast. Villefranche, Monaco and Cannes are all short train rides away, the beaches are pebbles rather than sand, and summer is both the best and the most expensive time to be here.
