The heart of it is Fortitude Valley, the nightlife district about two kilometers northeast of the center, gay since the 1980s and still the home of most of the city's queer venues along and around Wickham Street. The energy spills into the neighboring riverside pockets of New Farm and Teneriffe, where cafes, galleries, and a relaxed residential scene round out the picture.
