About LGBTQ+ Christchurch

New Zealand legalized same-sex marriage in 2013. Christchurch, the largest city of the South Island, keeps a modest, welcoming queer scene that has quietly rebuilt alongside the city itself since the earthquakes of the early 2010s.

The nightlife gathers near the central Cathedral Square, where the long-running Cruz, one of the better-known gay bars in the country, anchors a small cluster of bars and a sauna. Much of the old scene had to be rebuilt after the quakes reshaped the center, and what has returned is intimate and community-driven.
