About LGBTQ+ Queenstown

New Zealand legalized same-sex marriage in 2013 and ranks among the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in the world, with strong legal protections and easy social acceptance. Queenstown, the South Island's adventure capital set on Lake Wakatipu, has no gay district and barely needs one: acceptance here is so thorough that nearly every bar is a mixed, welcoming space.

What Queenstown does have is a marquee event. Winter Pride, long known as Gay Ski Week, is the southern hemisphere's biggest alpine LGBTQ+ gathering, filling the town each winter with skiing, parties, and community festivities. Outside that week, gay-friendly bars and restaurants across the town center carry the same open spirit.
