About LGBTQ+ Brisbane
Australia legalized same-sex marriage in 2017 after a national vote, and Queensland's capital has grown into one of the country's most welcoming LGBTQ+ cities. Brisbane pairs a subtropical, outdoorsy pace with a scene that has been steadily gathering confidence.
The heart of it is Fortitude Valley, the nightlife district about two kilometers northeast of the center, gay since the 1980s and still the home of most of the city's queer venues along and around Wickham Street. The energy spills into the neighboring riverside pockets of New Farm and Teneriffe, where cafes, galleries, and a relaxed residential scene round out the picture. The Sportsman Hotel, gay-run for decades, is a long-standing institution.
