South Australia was the first Australian state to decriminalize homosexuality, back in 1975, and same-sex marriage became law nationwide in 2017. Adelaide, the elegant capital of festivals, carries that early progressive streak into one of the Southern Hemisphere's richest slates of queer culture.
There is no single gay village; the scene spreads across the inner city in Adelaide's relaxed, integrated style, with the West End and Hindley Street precinct the closest thing to a traditional queer strip. Venues like Mary's Poppin and the Mylk bars carry the nightlife, but the city's queer identity is defined as much by its festivals as its bars.
