Gay Guide to Vitória
Brazil legalized same-sex marriage in 2013 and criminalized homophobia and transphobia in 2019. Vitória, the island capital of Espírito Santo affectionately nicknamed "VIX," has a small but fast-growing LGBTQ+ scene and has become one of Brazil's up-and-coming queer beach destinations.
The city has no permanent strip of exclusively gay bars the way São Paulo or Belo Horizonte do; instead, themed parties, independent collectives, and LGBTQ+ nights at the clubs keep the calendar busy year-round, with new queer-focused venues opening steadily.
Espírito Santo has been notably proactive on LGBTQ+ rights, with a state council dedicated to anti-discrimination policy, part of what has drawn more queer travelers to the coast.
Vitória joins Brazil's Pride season each year, adding to the region's rising queer visibility.
