About LGBTQ+ Rio de Janeiro
Marielle Franco was a Black bisexual city councilwoman who grew up in the Maré favela and built her politics on opposing Rio's militias. On 14 March 2018 she was shot dead in the center of the city along with her driver, Anderson Gomes. She was 38. The two former police officers who fired the shots were convicted in October 2024. The men who ordered it were not convicted until February 2026, nearly eight years after the fact. Her face is painted on walls across Rio, and her widow, Mônica Benício, now sits on the same city council.
Ipanema is where the scene starts, in daylight. Posto 9 is the gay stretch of sand, marked by rainbow flags and impossible to miss, and Rua Farme de Amoedo runs back from it as the street version of the same thing. To Nem Aí handles the drinks.

Copacabana takes the evening. The Rainbow Kiosk sits right on the beachfront, with TV Bar, La Cueva and Fosfobox nearby, and the mix here skews older and more local than Ipanema does.
Lapa, inland and considerably rougher around the edges, holds Mansão L&D in the old Buraco da Lacraia space and the Meio Mundo sauna, while Seven Cruising, Club 117, Rio G Spa and Termas Pasárgada cover the rest of that end.
Rio de Janeiro Pride runs along Copacabana beach. Two practical notes: the daytime beach scene genuinely matters here more than the nightlife, and the standard Rio advice applies to everyone, which is to carry little, use ride apps after dark, and not walk between neighborhoods at night.
