Gay Guide to Tbilisi
Georgia decriminalized homosexuality in 2000, but there is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships, social hostility runs high, and anti-LGBTQ+ violence is a real risk with limited police protection. Against that backdrop, Tbilisi has a resilient, largely underground queer scene, coded and community-protected.
The anchor is Success Bar, the city's unofficial gay bar tucked on a side street near Rustaveli, alongside a handful of low-key bars and cafes where the community gathers.
Tbilisi's celebrated techno clubs double as queer havens: Bassiani, Georgia's biggest club, hosts Horoom Nights, the largest queer party in the Caucasus.
Inside these spaces people are free to be themselves; in much of the city, though, visible queerness can draw hostility, and discretion is essential outside venues.
