About LGBTQ+ Mykonos
Jackie Kennedy came to Mykonos in 1961 and the international jet set followed her, Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren among them, landing the full apparatus of mid-century glamour on a dry Cycladic island that had been living on fishing. Gay travelers began arriving through the 1970s for the more ordinary reason that they could be left alone here. An Italian-American painter, Pierro Aversa, and a local fisherman, Andreas Koutsoukos, opened Pierro's, the island's first gay bar. Greece itself did not legalize same-sex marriage until February 2024, by which point Mykonos had been running its own arrangements for half a century.
Mykonos Town is a deliberate whitewashed maze, built that way to confuse pirates and now performing the same service on visitors. The Jackie O' town bar, Porta, Lola, Kastro's, Katerina's, Montparnasse, At54 and Cosma sit within the same few blocks of lanes, and the Little Venice waterfront handles the sunset ritual.

Elia Beach is the main gay beach, out on the south coast and reached by boat or a winding road, with Agrari quieter nearby and Paradise running the daytime party at full volume.
XLSIOR Festival takes over the island in August and is one of the largest international circuit events anywhere, which is either the reason to come in that window or the reason to avoid it.
Two warnings. Mykonos is expensive in a way that surprises even people expecting it, with sunbeds that outprice dinner. And the season runs roughly May to early October; outside it, a great deal of the island is simply shut.
