About LGBTQ+ Bucharest
Romania decriminalized homosexuality in 2001, later than most of Europe, and still recognizes no same-sex partnerships, though a 2018 referendum aimed at constitutionally banning same-sex marriage failed for lack of turnout. Bucharest, the sprawling capital once called the Paris of the East, has a queer scene that has grown markedly bolder over the past decade.
There is no official gay neighborhood, but the nightlife concentrates in and around the lively Old Town, or Centrul Vechi, where the main gay club Escape and a run of queer-friendly bars sit among the district's restaurants and clubs. The scene is centered, walkable, and increasingly confident.
