Bulgaria decriminalized homosexuality in 1968, relatively early for the region, but it recognizes no same-sex partnerships and amended its constitution in 2024 to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Sofia, the capital beneath Vitosha mountain, keeps a small but growing queer scene at the country's leading edge.
The nightlife runs on a handful of welcoming central bars and clubs that create cozy, community-minded spaces for locals and visitors. The city center is generally comfortable to move around, though public affection can draw attention, and Pride has long faced hostility from the Orthodox Church and far-right groups.
