About LGBTQ+ Tainan

Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019, and its full legal equality applies just as much in Tainan as in Taipei. Tainan, the island's oldest city and its former capital, is a place of temples, heritage streets, and celebrated food rather than a nightlife destination, and its queer life is correspondingly low-key.

There is no dedicated gay bar district here. Instead the scene runs through a handful of gay-owned and gay-friendly cafes and cocktail bars where a younger crowd gathers, supported by the local community and welcoming to visitors. The mood is relaxed and unpretentious.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, Tainan offers the comfort of a marriage-equality society combined with the slower rhythm of a historic city. Come for the culture and the food, and expect an easygoing, tolerant atmosphere rather than a concentrated gay scene.
