Homosexuality has been legal across China since 1997, though same-sex marriage is unrecognized, legal protections are absent, and public LGBTQ+ organizing has faced tightening restrictions in recent years. Guangzhou, the sprawling capital of Guangdong province, carries a reputation as one of southern China's more relaxed big cities, but its queer scene is discreet rather than flag-waving.
There is no single gay district here. Bars and clubs surface across the city and cycle through openings and closures, so the scene rewards asking around and checking current listings over relying on any fixed address. The nightlife is real and growing, especially among a younger crowd, but it keeps a low profile.
