About LGBTQ+ Saugatuck

Marriage equality came to Michigan in 2015, but the neighboring lakeshore towns of Saugatuck and Douglas have welcomed queer visitors since the 1950s. Long known as the Provincetown of the Midwest, this pair of arts-driven resort villages on Lake Michigan shares one inclusive, easygoing culture.

There is no district because the towns themselves are the destination, from the galleries and shops of Butler Street to the beaches and dunes along the lake. At the center of it all is The Dunes Resort, which grew from a small 1981 motel-and-bar into one of the most recognized LGBTQ+ resorts in the country, shaping the area's queer-friendly identity.
