About LGBTQ+ Madison
Wisconsin made history as the first US state to ban anti-gay discrimination, back in 1982, and Madison, the progressive state capital and university city, has long been one of the Midwest's most reliably LGBTQ+-friendly places. Marriage equality arrived statewide in 2014.
There is no single gayborhood; queer life threads through the walkable isthmus downtown, close to the Capitol and the University of Wisconsin campus. The nightlife anchors on a handful of well-loved venues, from the dance floors of FIVE to the neighborhood feel of Woof's, with pop-up nights filling in a scene that punches above the city's size thanks to its student energy.
