About LGBTQ+ Detroit
April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse were two nurses working Detroit hospitals, one in a neonatal intensive care unit and one in an emergency room, raising foster children together whom they could not both legally parent. They sued Michigan in 2012 over the adoption ban. The judge told them the real obstacle was the marriage ban and invited them to amend the complaint. They did, they won in March 2014, and their case went to the Supreme Court in 2015 bundled with three others. Obergefell is the name on the ruling; DeBoer is the one that began with two nurses who wanted to both be allowed to sign a school form.
Most of the scene sits outside the city limits, in Ferndale and Royal Oak, close enough to reach in fifteen minutes. Affirmations, the community center, anchors Ferndale, with Soho and Pronto nearby, and the district is genuinely walkable in a region that otherwise is not.

In Detroit proper, Menjo's Complex has been running for decades and is the historic room, with Adam's Apple, Gigi's for drag, HALO in the old Hayloft Saloon and the Backstreet Multiplex spread across the city.
The Ruth Ellis Center carries a name worth knowing. Ruth Ellis was born in 1899 and lived to 101, and from the 1940s her Detroit house was a gathering place for Black gay people who had nowhere else to go. The center now works with LGBTQ+ young people, many of them homeless, alongside LGBT Detroit and the Trans Sistas of Color Project.
Motor City Pride takes Hart Plaza downtown in June and Ferndale Pride runs its own smaller, friendlier version. Outside those, this is a region you drive.
