About LGBTQ+ Detroit

Same-sex marriage came to Michigan in 2015, when a Detroit-area case became part of the Supreme Court's nationwide ruling. Metro Detroit's LGBTQ+ life has long centered less on the downtown core than on the welcoming suburbs that ring it.

The clearest gay hub is Ferndale, an inner-ring suburb north of the city known as the most LGBTQ-friendly community in the region and home to the Affirmations community center. Its main strip carries most of the area's gay bars, from casual lounges to late dance nights. Menjo's, a longtime gay institution once frequented by a young Madonna, remains part of the scene's history.
