Costa Rica made history on 26 May 2020 as the first country in Central America to legalize same-sex marriage, cementing its reputation as the region's most welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. San José, the highland capital, is the heart of that scene.
The gayborhood is Barrio Escalante, alongside the neighboring San Pedro university district, a revitalized quarter of restored homes, garden cafes, tree-lined streets, and queer-owned businesses east of downtown. Nightlife anchors on long-running venues like La Avispa, a community favorite since 1979, plus dance bars, drag clubs, and saunas closer to the center.
