Gay Guide to Riga
Latvia decriminalized homosexuality in 1992 and, in 2024, introduced legal recognition for same-sex partnerships, a hard-won step in one of the more socially conservative corners of the European Union. Riga, the grand Baltic capital, keeps a small, resilient, community-driven queer scene.
There is no gay village, but the leafy Art Nouveau District north of the Old Town is the most relaxed part of the city for LGBTQ+ visitors, and a handful of bars, a cruise bar, and a sauna make up an intimate nightlife that leans on tight-knit local energy rather than scale. Riga's stunning architecture, from medieval Old Town to the world's densest concentration of art nouveau facades, is the backdrop.
The scene is modest and its visibility is still contested, so it rewards seeking out the community spaces where it gathers.
Riga Pride marches through the center each June, and every few years the city hosts the larger Baltic Pride, a week-long event that rotates between Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn as a show of regional solidarity.
