About LGBTQ+ Helsinki
Finland got marriage equality by petition. A citizens' initiative called Tahdon2013, meaning "I do", gathered 166,851 signatures, went to parliament under a mechanism that had never produced a law before, and passed in November 2014. It was the first citizens' initiative in Finnish history to become legislation, and it took effect in 2017. In February 2023 parliament voted 113 to 69 to end the requirement that trans people be sterilized and psychiatrically diagnosed before changing their legal gender, replacing it with self-declaration after a thirty-day reflection period.
The scene is small and sits in the center of the city. DTM, short for Don't Tell Mama, is the one everybody names: a bar, club and cafe across several floors that functions as the community's living room rather than just a night out. Hercules takes the club end, and Mann's Street, Fairytale, Gate21, Room BLVD, H2O2, Struts and the Street Pride Bar fill in around them.

Seta has been the national LGBTI organization since 1974 and does the policy and support work, with TransHelsinki running the trans side. There is also a gay sauna, which in Finland carries a weight it does not elsewhere, this being a country with roughly one sauna for every two people.
Helsinki Pride takes a week at the end of June and is among the largest annual gatherings in the country, and the Helsinki International Queer Film Festival programs in the autumn.
Finland is dark for a long stretch of the year and the scene contracts indoors accordingly. Summer is short, bright almost around the clock, and the city behaves entirely differently in it, which is worth planning around rather than resisting.
