Gay Guide to Northampton
Massachusetts became the first US state to legalize same-sex marriage, in 2004, and few places embody that legacy like Northampton. This small, artsy college town in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts is so identified with queer, and especially lesbian, life that it has long been called the lesbian capital of the country.
There is no single strip; the whole walkable downtown carries the vibe, a low-key, hipsterish stretch of gay-friendly bars, cafes, bookshops, and live-music venues around Main Street, anchored by the presence of Smith College. The scene runs more on community, culture, and everyday visibility than on big clubs.

Local Pride, long known as Noho Pride, traces back to a 1982 liberation march and remains a spring fixture, one of the oldest continuous Pride traditions in the region.
